Change & Transition

It's helpful to think of life as involving both changes and transitions.

  • Change is situational, the events marking our life. Changes may just happen or may be chosen.

  • Transition is the personal side of change, marking our personal growth. Transitions realign our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors to better fit the unfolding situation.

Survive
& Thrive

In most cases, our difficulty comes not from adjusting to the external change, rather from the distress of letting go of a part of ‘what’s comfortable’ – a habit, an outlook, a goal, a value, a piece of our reality.

  • When we lack an understanding of transition, we may become discouraged. We may say that things aren’t going well. We may look for ways to fix things and get back to normal.

  • When we understand transition, we recognize life is calling for the courage to let go and renew ourselves. It’s a call to adapt, to not just survive but thrive.

Reorient
& Develop

The function of transition is to help us come to terms with change. Transitions reorient and develop us whether we’re preparing, dealing with an active event, or awash in its aftermath.

  • Reorientation mobilizes our energy to deal with the situation.

  • Development moves us into a better fit with the unfolding situation.
